We'll start with personal inventory space, the amount of 'stuff' a character can carry on his or her 'person'. A new character starts with 5 container slots with the first slot filled with a Starter Backpack itself containing 20 item slots. Sigurd was able to get 2 additional 4-slot bags from drops while questing in the starting area. Of course, you'll want to add to this, but it is more space than you might at first think. Let's take a look at Sigurd's inventory space after some time questing. (Sigurd was able to craft the 8 slot Reinforced Bronze Boxes himself as discussed later.) Having bag slots in your inventory in which you can place additional bags is fairly typical for most MMOs. My buddy reminded me that that is not the case in Runescape. Your starting inventory is all you get (although you can get beasts of burden as you progress).
As you can see here, Sigurd's inventory is getting a bit full. He is out in the middle of the wilderness, and yes, he could use a waypoint to head back to a capital city to use the bank, or at least a local outpost to vendor some stuff, but he'd really rather not, and chances are, he doesn't really need to.
First, note that you can right click the little gear icon on your inventory dialog and choose 'Deposit Collectables'. Whas thas fer? Well, it ain't fer cookin'. As briefly mentioned in a prior post, collectables are resources that are used by the various crafting disciplines. Don't forget, everyone's a gatherer and you'll also get collectables from drops (in fact those types of collectables are very valuable so DON'T vendor them). Even if you do not use a type of collectable in your crafting discipline, they are worth selling via the BLTC. So, by choosing 'Deposit Collectables' all collectables in your personal inventory will be directly deposited into your Bank's collectable area (a separate area that does not use up your Bank bag space either). And all without going anywhere! Sweet!
Now, round two of recovering inventory space. Besides arming yourself with gathering tools, you should also travel with salvage kits (imho). Salvage kits do two things: recover raw materials from items (weapons or armor) AND from items flagged as a 'Salvage Item'. Many players don't bother salvaging, especially low level items, but I find it useful despite the cost of the kits (which are pretty reasonable really), because, as you salvage items you wouldn't otherwise want, you get... collectables. And what can you do with collectables? Deposit them for later sale or use! Obviously, you want to make sure that that item you are about to salvage is not useful for you personally, your friends or guildies, or something that you think you could make a lot of money from the BLTC with.
Beyond this, you can obtain more containers from drops or from crafting (Bags from Tailors, and Boxes from Armorsmiths). You can craft the items yourself if you choose one of the appropriate crafting disciplines, from another player or your guild who has crafted them, or via the Black Lion Trading Company (BLTC - which will deserve a post of it's own) where other crafters have posted their wares. As an Armorsmith, Sigurd made two (2) 8-slot boxes, so he now has all 5 container slots filled for a total of 44 item slots in his personal inventory.
Ok, so what about the bank? Well, you already know that there is a 'Collectable' segment of the bank which allows you to store all collectables without taking up any personal Bank slots. Initially, you get 30 bank slots with more being available as an additional purchase (using Gems, which we'll cover in a later post). Here, Sigurd has emptied out most of his Personal Inventory in preparation for extended questing in the wilds. Note the stack of 16 chocolate bannanas. He cannot stand to be without chocolate bannanas.
And here you can see that at level 20 he has a considerable number of collectables for crafting.
Sorry it's been so long since my last post. Real life has a way of impacting your... ummm... virtual life? Yeah, so anyway, that's why I'm a casual gamer. So here is one more screenshot of a Vista as a bonus. Ciao!
